Cheddar Caves and Gorge organisers of the annual Crag Attack (Cheddar Gorge Climbing Marathon)  are delighted to announce that David Moore the organiser of the original Cheddar Challenge Cycling Event has joined their team and is organising a road Sportive and Mountain Bike Challenges on SUNDAY 16th May 2010 from 9.00 am. 

Cheddar is well known in the cycling world and the focus of the launch of this event is to cement this fixture into the annual sportive calendar

 CHEDDAR GORGE CYCLE  SPORTIVE

The road sportive has a designed route incorporating a few flat sections but it is about a maximum output with searing climbs and fast descents, indeed the start is “in” CHEDDAR GORGE, a notorious killer climb.  Another three Gorges feature on the 80km plus route.

CHEDDAR GORGE MTB RANDONEES

Cheddar is the spiritual home of Mountain Biking with an unmatched pedigree.  It is our intention that this event shall live up to those expectations.  If so, and it is a success, this will provide a sustainable foundation on which the event can grow for the future.

The usual route maps, for on road Sportive and off road MTB challenges, and timing will be provided, on the day, at sign on.  Medical cover at the start/finish area will be available as will a feed stop at the finish. Third party insurance is provided by British Cycling.  It is advised that all individuals, also provide their own insurance.

Details about the route will be posted here on this website, including total altitude, difficulty rating, and distance.  It is our intention to make this a memorable ride for both on and off road participants.

Toilet facilities and cafes are immediately available in the Gorge.  Accommodation in Hotels, B & B and Holiday Caravan, Camping Parks abound in the village www.cheddarcaves.co.uk  or www.cheddar.tic@sedgemoor.gov.uk   Parking is available in public pay and display. FREE PARKING is available at Broadway Acres, opposite Broadway House Caravan Park, Axbridge Road BS27 3DB.  Free transport for non cyclists on the Cheddar Caves and Gorge open top, Double Decker Bus. Why not bring your families for the weekend or even the day, to enjoy all the facilities Cheddar, the famous Caves and the Cheddar Gorge have to offer. Sorry no facilities for bikes on the Bus, only bodies, your friends and families. It is only one mile to the start.

 Start times will be posted.  These events are mass participation rides, so start times will be staggered from 9.30 am. Although timing is available, the purpose for this is that all participants can see what time they completed their ride in.  No prizes are awarded.  No rider numbers are used.   All participants must fit the timing transponder  to front forks which is provided with written instructions   Please bring zip ties just in case. All transponders to be returned at the end of the event, or £10 fee levied.

More information will be added and updated on this website. Certificates will be provided for all participants who complete their distance, giving their exact time.

 For the Sportive road cyclists a route card will be provided with an arrowed route of  81.5 km AGE 18+(6-8 hrs)

For the M.T.B. riders we will provide route cards for 3 partially marked routes.

Easy route 1.         MILD (cheddar)  10 km                     AGE 12 +   ( 1-2 ½ hrs)

Difficult route 2.  MEDIUM (cheddar)  19 km               AGE 16 +   (3 – 4 hrs)

Severe route 3.      STRONG (serious cheddar)  58 km  AGE 18+   (6 – 8 hrs)

All riders under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.  All riders of any age must wear a helmet.  Insurance is null and void, if not strictly adhered to.

Also happening in the GORGE, for participants, family and friends and all other visitors, Cheddar Caves and Gorge are promoting two other events  a CHEDDAR GORGE X -COUNTRY RUN which follows a challenging  12km route introducing runners to the finest countryside on the Mendip Hills.

The CHEDDAR GORGE CLIMBING MARATHON. calls for climbers to take part in a series of events which have proved popular in previous Crag Attack festivals: a Tyrolean Traverse, Sunset Buttress Abseil, High Rock Speed Climb, Bouldering and Dyno. Slacklining and an Open Speed Climb may also be available. For information about these events as it becomes available click onto  www.cheddarcaves.co.uk

 FEES

 All entries will be on line only (except on the day entries – subject to availability)  The link will be on this web page from mid December.

Entry fees for these events is £20, plus an on line entry fee. On day entries £25 no surcharges for 12yrs-14yrs.  Sorry there are no refunds given, so please do not ask. On day entries will be cash only, no card or cheque facilities.
