Event preparation and training
Overview
Being prepared for an event can mean the difference between having a great day out or suffering with every pedal turn. Both the bike and rider need to be in good condition and ready for the task.
Cycling is a fun sport, but having a reasonable level of fitness, a well maintained bike and spares kit will make events far more enjoyable.
XC Mountain Bike - (Cheddar Bikefest)
Racers competed in the Cheddar Challenge on a wide variety of bikes - Full suspension, Hardtail, rigid, singlespeed, XC, downhill and kids bikes. You name it, it's been ridden here. There is no gospel to setting up to win here but here are some tips.
- Instructions
Instructions for use
Once loaded, hover the mouse pointer over the bike to display information.
- Saddle
Body spares Hydration pack, helmet, gloves, small first aid kit, pump, multi-tools etc.
- Traction
Traction You may need 1 or 2 spare inner tubes. Another excellent option is a latex solution and UST tyres.
Check the weather forecast and course update near to the event.
- Anchors
Anchors Make sure you have plenty of life left in your brake pads or blocks as the course does require lots of braking.
- Dangly bits
Dangly bits chain spares, rear derailleur hanger (if replaceable), spare gear and brake cable and bring some chain lube.
- Seat height
Seat height
A quick-release seat clamp is extremely useful for quickly lowering your saddle for steep technical descents
and putting it back up for climbs. Make sure that your seat height is set to a correct height for optimum pedalling.
- Stoppers
The "Stop" button
Make sure that your brakes are correctly setup and fully working before the race. A catching brake block can be very demoralising!
- Pedals
"Go" button and cogs
Flat pedals or SPD type are fine. If you are learning to use SPDs do not bring them as they will distract you from concentrating on the trail while you try to clip in. Any chainset is fine, just be ready for a bit of climbing on the course. Just make sure your chain is clean and well oiled.
- Frame
Steed
Any off road bike is suitable for the course, but we recommend a good quality mountain bike with at least front suspension to make the riding more comfortable.
- Forks
Springs and things
Make sure that your forks and suspension are in full working order before the race. Check oil levels, air pressures and make sure the fork cycles freely.
Spares
We recommend bringing a selection of spares for your bike. Some manufacturers spares may be available on trade stands, but they may not be suitable for specific bikes.
